Transforming Lives, One Drop at a Time: The Journey of the OB2 Village Well Project

A Year-Long Journey to Sustainable Clean Water

It has been a year since we embarked on our mission to bring clean water to Mwambongo Village in the Mzimba District of Malawi. A journey that started with a simple idea and a passion for change has evolved into a project that promises a healthier future for the residents of Mwambongo Village and its surroundings.

The Generosity That Fueled the Dream

We owe a debt of gratitude to the OB Men’s Bible Study and Waters Edge Faith Community. Their collective effort raised an impressive $10,500 over the course of a year, demonstrating that community and compassion can indeed create miracles.

The Project Milestones

  • Identification and assessment of Mwambongo Village

  • Completion of the Hydrological Survey

  • Final funding received by mid-August 2023

  • Borehole drilling commenced in the first week of September 2023

  • Awaiting Public Works signoff for pump installation

As we eagerly anticipate the official green light from Public Works this month, we look forward to the ceremonial handoff and the well becoming operational.

Meeting the Community’s Needs

In a village where the closest water source is a stream a kilometer away—and where no other boreholes exist in the surrounding five villages—the impact of this project is immeasurable. Mwambongo Village has an approximate population of 920, and the well is expected to serve around 800 users.

The Human Stories Behind the Need for Clean Water

Village Headman Vavera narrates stories that highlight the struggles faced by the villagers. From families fighting over the time spent fetching water to perilous encounters with alligators in the river, the need for a reliable and safe water source has never been more pressing. Life-threatening water-borne diseases have also been rampant due to the lack of clean water.

One of the water sources formerly used by the villagers

While the villagers are educated on the importance of clean drinking water, their efforts to secure a borehole from government sources had remained futile—until now.

Lives in Mwambongo Village

The residents primarily rely on small-scale farming, growing crops like tobacco, maize, groundnuts, and soya beans. A significant number of youths migrate to South Africa, leaving behind families who depend on the yearly harvest for sustenance.

What’s Next?

We’re on the brink of changing lives in Mwambongo Village, thanks to each contribution and gesture of goodwill. While we celebrate the milestones reached, we remain vigilant to ensure the well's long-term impact on the community.

As we edge closer to the well becoming operational, we can't help but feel excited about the ripple effect this will have on health, daily life, and the general well-being of the residents. Together, we are not just drilling a well; we are digging a pathway to a better future.
