Community Development Training

Community leaders are trained in the ideas of ABCD: Asset-Based Community Development which focuses on the assets that already exist in the community. The citizen participants commit to discovering available resources and skills to realize their community goals.

Shalom Skills Training

The SHALOM approach we present for faith-based community development posits a holistic and systemic method of transforming communities from within.

Rooted in the biblical concept of "Shalom," which signifies peace, completeness, and welfare, this approach is captured succinctly in the phrase from Jeremiah 29:7, “Seek the shalom of the city where I have sent you, and pray to the Lord in its behalf, for in its shalom, you will find your shalom.” The methodology comprises six essential threads: Systemic and sustainable change, Health, healing and wholeness, Asset-based community development, Love for God and others, Organizing for community action, and the creation of Multicultural, multifaith coalitions.

The SHALOM approach advocates not only for immediate aid but also for the transformation of the systems that perpetuate social ills, requiring prophetic leadership that speaks truth to power.

At the heart of this framework is the commitment to community service and the discovery and mobilization of a community's hidden assets. These assets range from cultural values to material resources, all of which can contribute to a sustainable transformation.

Utilizing a model called Community Impact Teams, or Shalom Teams, the approach is designed to be applied to various scales of community— from a single block to a whole town. The ultimate aim is to develop communities that are intrinsically connected, resilient, and spiritually anchored, emphasizing that collective well-being (shalom) is intricately linked to individual well-being, as highlighted in the words of Martin Luther King, Jr., "all of life is interrelated."
